Rushikulya

The torch of a fisherman weaves a pattern as he fishes at the mouth of River Rushikulya in Orissa

An olive ridley turtle waddles into the ocean after laying eggs on the beach near the mouth of River Rushikulya

Wet sand sticks to the beak of an olive ridley turtle making its way towards the sea

A pair of olive ridleys make their way to the sea

An olive ridley returns to sea

Dogs raid the nest of an olive ridley

Exhaustion is writ large on the face of an olive ridley as it takes a break before pulling itself up on to the beach. She is a latecomer and her nest is likely to be more vulnerable to destruction.

An olive ridley rests on sand wet by waves

An olive ridley surveys the photographer before taking her next step

The long march

Blending with patterns

Admiring the pattern?

More olive ridleys return to sea as the sun rises

Final look before return

Work done

No looking back

Touching distance

Sand crusted

Final dash

In dangerous company

This local informed me that they left the bigger olive ridleys alone but added that the hatchlings were good to produce oil and as food. He said the oil was good for the joints.

Who will bell the plastics cat. Here a bell shaped piece of a plastic can has been strung from a pine bough on Rushikulya beach about 180 km from Bhubaneswar in Orissa. More plastic refuse is strewn across the beach, which is one of the few rookeries of the olive ridley turtle.

Delible prints

The plastic footprint along Rushikulya beach is not as easily as these prints along the wave washed beach.
